Step 1. The line drawing
The line drawing for placement of objects is the first step in each
of my paintings.

Step 2. Darkest Areas
In "Slow Waltz" the darkest areas are completed
first starting with French Gray 70%. The darkest areas against the lightest
value (the white of the paper) give me a map for determining what the
middle values should be. Additional colors are added on top of French
Gray. The tonal foundation of flower petals will be built over all petals
that are darker than medium value.Verithin Black is used in the darkest
areas and to crisp edges.

Step 3. Darkest Petals
Indigo Blue is applied to the darkest areas
of the petals over the French Gray 70%. Remaining colors are then applied
by gentle layering or juxtaposition

Step 4. Color the Flowers
Notice that pink in the flowers is added to
those in the foreground, not to the hydrangeas in the right corner
which are cooler in color so they recede. Blue Violet is added to
parts of the cast shadow in the center of the image as a reflection
of the hydrangeas. Leaves are Black and Peacock Green.

Step 5. Pear Volume and Form The volume and form of the pears are built
with gently layered Olive Green and Mulberry. Blue Violet is used to
enhance shadows beneath the flowers and across the linen. To balance
the upper left and lower right corners, I decrease the size of the leaf
in upper left by adding two more hydrangea petals and darken the shadow
in the lower right corner. Value and color of the shadows under the
linen is adjusted by lifting color and adding Limepeel. Value is added
to the foreground with French Gray 30%, Light Peach and Sand. Olive
Green is added to leaves.

Step 6. Color the Pears
Limepeel and Blue Violet are added to the
pears. Colors are gently layered on top of the foundation built in
